ABOUT THE ARTIST

Marilee Stockman
Marilee Stockman’s passions for life and art are evident in her sculptures and paintings.
Her sculpture has an alluring quality brought on by the powerful moodiness expressed. The surface resolutions of her sculpture enhance the depth of the emotions expressed and the surface resolutions, which enhance the depth of the emotional experience for the viewer. The feeling for the forms and shapes of nature is the inspiration for both her abstract and figurative works. She relates all of her work to the figure and it’s relationship to its environmental surroundings.
Marilee creates her sculptures from clay, wax, bronze, stone, wood, and welded steel. She loves people and the human form and most of her work is figurative in some way. While working in wood, she feels the warmth of the wood, which gives it life as she carves. Working with steel doesn’t have the warmth feeling, but being able to heat, bend, and form it into something gives her much satisfaction. The bronze figures are much more complex than the other materials as she does mostly ballet figures in difficult positions and recently a series of horses.
“I like working with my hands and the feel of shaping things. I want to feel the creation,” says the artist. “My inspiration comes from the materials themselves. Sometimes I want to express emotions and other times I let it come to me.”
She also expresses these emotions through her paintings. Having a special interest in people, she has a strong background with portraits and she finds working en plein air, painting outdoors, especially very inspirational and invigorating.
She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from California State University at Long Beach, Long Beach, CA in 2000. She also has studied with Lincoln Fox, Veryl Goodnight and John Coleman.
New Elements Gallery, Wilmington, NC and Showcase Gallery, Santa Ana, CA, represents Marilee. She is a member of the Orange County Fine Arts Association, Southern California Plein Art Painters Association, and American Museum of Women. She has participated in many juried art shows and won several awards. Her work is in several private collections in Ohio, California, North Carolina and New York.
